Actor Daniel Balaji, who worked primarily in Tamil films, died of a heart attack at a private hospital in Chennai last night. The actor was reportedly rushed to the hospital yesterday after he complained of chest pain. 

The 48-year-old actor’s sudden death has stunned the Tamil film industry and his fans. His body has been taken to his Purasaiwakkam home for cremation.

Soon after the news of Mr Balaji’s broke, tributes began pouring in on social media.

Daniel Balaji started his career as a unit production manager in Kamal Haasan’s unfinished ‘Marudhunayagam’. He then moved to television with Radikaa Sarathkumar’s ‘Chithhi’, where his character was named Daniel – earning him the screen name, Daniel Balaji.

He has played memorable roles in ‘Kakka Kakka‘ and  ‘Vettaiyadu Vilayadu‘.

His movie debut happened in 2002 with the Tamil film ‘April Madhathil’. Apart from Tamil films, he starred in several Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada movies.

He was last seen in ‘Ariyavan‘.

Tamil actor Daniel Balaji passed away on Friday, March 29 night. He suffered a heart attack following which he was rushed to a private hospital in Chennai, where he breathed his last. Balaji’s final rites will be held today. He was 48.

Film analyst Sreedhar Pillai took to his X handle to share the news of Balaji’s demise. “#DanielBalaji (48) a fine actor passed away late night due to a cardiac arrest. Who can forget his voice and performance as the antagonist in Vettaiyaadu Vilayaadu, Polladhavan? #RIPDanielBalaji.”

The news of Daniel Balaji’s sudden death has shocked fans and others. Director Mohan Raja paid tribute to Balaji via his X handle and wrote, “Such a Sad news. He Was an inspiration for me to join film institute. A very good friend. Miss working with him. May his soul rest in peace.”

One of the fans expressed grief at Balaji’s sudden demise and called him “the greatest villain of Tamil Cinema and one of the finest actors of Indian Cinema.”

Daniel Balaji made his acting debut in the Tamil industry with the 2002 film April Madhathil. However, he became popular with Gautham Menon and Suriya-Jyotika’s Kaakha Kaakha. He later appeared in several other Tamil movies including Vidhi Madhi Ultaa and Polladhavan. He also starred in Thalapathy Vijay’s Bairavaa, Dhanush’s Vada Chennai, and Vijay’s Bigil.

Apart from being a popular name in the Tamil film industry, Balaji also worked in a few Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada movies.
